Press release from the Gay and Lesbian Network, Pietermaritzburg

Are you interested in getting fit while helping people at the same time?

If you are, then be sure to join us for an action packed session of Zumba with Nicci Muscat, Chantal Anley and Kaelyn Govender as we Dance Against Hate. This event will be held on Saturday 28 July from 9am, at St Alpheges Church, at 24 Connaught Road in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg. Entrance is just R50 and there will be great prizes up for grabs and selling of rainbow cupcakes on the day.

Zumba is the most popular group exercise in the world! It is inspired by Latin dance and incorporates dancing, music and movement into an exercise routine that feels more like a dance party than a workout. Not only will it help you lose weight and build muscle, it also reduces stress levels, leaving you feeling happy and energised for hours.

This event is a fundraiser for the Gay & Lesbian Network and all funds raised will go towards fighting the plight of hate crimes. A report published earlier this year by the Hate Crimes Working Group revealed that at least 35% of all (reported) hate crime cases in South Africa involved lesbian, gay, and bisexual victims; while 8% involved transgender victims, where transgender women were particularly affected.

Anthony Waldhausen, director of the Gay and Lesbian Network said “This event is a major fundraiser for the Gay and Lesbian Network to raise much needed funds for our work around hate crimes that are perpetrated against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) community in KwaZulu-Natal. This would also include conducting workshop with the police, healthcare workers, schools in order sensitize them on LGBTI needs and hope they are more supportive towards LGBTI people. This event would also create an awareness of the work of the Network. I would like to take this opportunity to make a special thank you to the Zumba instructors Nicci Muscat, Chantal Anley and Kaelyn Govender who have come forward to support the event. We call on all the residents of Pietermaritzburg to support this worthwhile and important event”

The Gay & Lesbian Network is a registered non-profit organisation based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal It offers a wide range of programmes and services to the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) community. The organisation also works with the broader community to create a more enabling and welcoming environment, in which LGBTI’s can access services and be treated with respect, without discrimination or fear of violence and other hate crimes.
